Connecting a device to a network via a modem and a public telephone network. This is really just like a phone connection, except that paerties at two other ends are computers not people. The quality of the connection is not always good and data rates are limited. Maximum data rates used to be 56 kbps (56,000 bits per second), but new technologies sucha s ISDN are providing faster rates. An alternative way to conect two computers is through leased lines, however these are more expensive. |
